Where it came from
Swamp Thing #118 was published in April 1992 as part of the long-running Vertigo-adjacent run of the series, which had transitioned from a standard superhero comic into a hallmark of sophisticated, adult-oriented horror. By this stage in the character's history, the narrative focus shifted toward ecological mysticism and intense, surreal explorations of identity, deeply influenced by the foundations laid by Alan Moore during the 1980s.
The issue was written by Nancy A. Collins, who took over the title to inject a distinct southern gothic atmosphere, paired with artwork by Tom Yeates. The creative team aimed to maintain the series' high standard of atmospheric dread and lyrical writing. It was received as a competent continuation of the title’s prestige era, appreciated by readers for its moody aesthetic and commitment to character-driven storytelling rather than traditional action tropes.
