Sword Art Online: Unital Ring #2

Unital Ring is the fifth major story arc in the Sword Art Online light novel series, authored by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. This volume, published in late 2020, serves as a direct continuation of the series following the conclusion of the Alicization arc. It explores a new survival game setting where characters from previous arcs are forcibly merged into a single reality, reflecting Kawahara's intent to bridge the distinct threads of his long-running narrative.

The character designs by abec remain central to the aesthetic identity of the franchise, maintaining the signature blend of fantasy elements and high-tech digital motifs that have defined the series since its inception. Upon release, the volume was received as a pivotal transition point for the core cast, moving away from the expansive virtual reality landscapes of previous arcs toward a more grounded, high-stakes exploration of the surviving protagonists' bonds under extreme pressure.
