Where it came from
Tailgunner Jo was an independent comic book series published by Sirius Entertainment in the mid-1990s. The series was created and illustrated by Jim Balent, who had recently departed his long-running stint as the artist for Catwoman at DC Comics. This project allowed Balent to exercise creative autonomy, leaning heavily into his distinctive pin-up aesthetic and character-driven design philosophy.
The character of Jo was conceived as a high-octane, action-oriented protagonist in a sci-fi military setting, reflecting the mid-90s boom in independent, artist-driven comic titles. Balent’s work on this series was marked by intricate line work and a focus on visual dynamism, which resonated with his established fanbase. While independent comics of this era often faced challenges in distribution and market longevity, the series remains a notable example of the transition of major-label artists into the burgeoning creator-owned market.
