Takemitsu Zamurai #1

Takemitsu Zamurai, illustrated by Taiyo Matsumoto and written by Issei Eifuku, first appeared in Big Comic Spirits in 2006. The series depicts the life of Seno Souichirou, a masterless samurai who settles in a tenement house in Edo-period Japan. Matsumoto chose a minimalist, brush-heavy aesthetic that departed from conventional manga styles to reflect the quiet, introspective nature of the protagonist and the atmospheric tension of the narrative.

The series received significant critical acclaim, winning the Excellence Award at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Its success is attributed to the synergistic collaboration between Eifuku’s nuanced character writing and Matsumoto’s idiosyncratic, expressive paneling, which emphasizes silence and movement over traditional action-focused tropes.
