Tales of Suspense #87

Published by Marvel Comics in March 1967, Tales of Suspense #87 serves as a key chapter in the Silver Age of comic books. At this time, the title featured split issues spotlighting Iron Man and Captain America, a format that allowed Stan Lee and a rotating cast of artists to experiment with serialized storytelling. This specific issue is noted for its role in the unfolding narratives of the Cold War era, which often permeated the themes of technological competition and political tension prevalent in Marvel’s stable at the time.

The cover and interior art for this period were heavily defined by the contributions of Gene Colan, whose atmospheric and cinematic style became a hallmark of the Iron Man segments. Working within the established Marvel Method, the creative team focused on developing Tony Stark's internal vulnerabilities alongside his armored persona. The issue was well-received by contemporary readers who appreciated the shift toward more complex, character-driven scripts that moved beyond simple villain-of-the-week conflicts.
