Tales of the Unexpected #96

Published by DC Comics in 1967, Tales of the Unexpected #96 arrived during a transitional era for the long-running anthology series. By the mid-1960s, the title was deeply entrenched in the science fiction and mystery genre that defined DC's output outside of its core superhero properties. This specific issue reflects the editorial push to maintain reader interest through self-contained, often eerie short stories that leaned into pulp-inspired tropes and speculative concepts.

The visual identity of this era was heavily shaped by a stable of veteran DC artists who balanced traditional comic aesthetics with the growing influence of psychedelic art styles seen in mainstream pop culture. As a staple of the silver age, the series relied on a rotating cast of writers and illustrators whose work was intended for quick consumption at newsstands. While the series eventually pivoted toward more traditional supernatural themes, the mid-90s issues remain a testament to the era's focus on imaginative, episodic storytelling that valued atmosphere over serialized continuity.
