Where it came from
Tales of the Unexpected number 97 was published by DC Comics in 1967 during the Silver Age of comics. The series, originally titled Tales of the Unexpected, had transitioned during this era from a science fiction and fantasy anthology title into a dedicated showcase for weird and supernatural mystery stories, reflecting the growing reader interest in suspenseful, macabre narratives.
The issue features the artistic contributions of DC stalwarts from that period, including work by illustrator Nick Cardy, who was well-regarded for his dynamic and clean style. The title is noted for its iconic, pulp-inspired cover aesthetics that defined the DC mystery line before the publisher eventually shifted the focus of the series toward characters like the Spectre and eventually rebranded it entirely.
