Tech Jacket #1

Tech Jacket #1 was released by Image Comics in 2002, marking the debut of a science-fiction superhero series created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist E.J. Su. The title was developed as an expansion of the Image Comics superhero universe during a period when the publisher was actively cultivating new creator-owned properties. The narrative centers on Zack Thompson, a teenager who accidentally becomes the host of a sophisticated alien combat suit, blending coming-of-age tropes with cosmic adventure.

The character design reflects a fusion of classic teenage angst with high-concept space opera aesthetics, heavily influenced by the visual dynamism common in early 2000s independent comics. E.J. Su's art style was intended to emphasize the fluidity and heavy weaponry of the titular suit, aiming to establish a distinct visual identity separate from Kirkman's more grounded work. Upon its release, the issue was well-received for its energetic pacing and served as a foundational entry point for the expansive world-building that would later see the character integrated into the wider Invincible universe.
