Where it came from
Released in 2017, this one-shot comic serves as a crossover between the long-running Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise and Stan Sakai's critically acclaimed Usagi Yojimbo series. Published by IDW Publishing, the issue was conceived to celebrate the decades-long friendship between Sakai and TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, continuing a tradition of collaborative storytelling that dates back to the late 1980s.
The issue was written and illustrated by Stan Sakai, who aimed to blend the adventurous spirit of Miyamoto Usagi with the iconic iconography of the Turtles. By centering the narrative on the mythical Namazu—a giant catfish from Japanese folklore capable of causing earthquakes—Sakai crafted a story that stays true to his signature blend of historical samurai drama and anthropomorphic action. It was well received by long-term fans of both franchises for its faithful character depictions and seamless integration of two distinct creative worlds.
