Where it came from
The Amazing Spider-Man #123 was published by Marvel Comics in August 1973. It was written by Gerry Conway and featured cover art by John Romita Sr., with interior pencils by Gil Kane. This specific issue is notable for its direct continuation of the narrative fallout following the tragic death of Gwen Stacy in issue #121 and the subsequent defeat of the Green Goblin in issue #122.
The story focuses on Peter Parker grappling with his grief while confronting Luke Cage, who has been hired by J. Jonah Jameson to capture Spider-Man. The design and narrative direction reflected the darker, more introspective tone Marvel explored in the early 1970s, moving away from purely villain-of-the-month tropes to address the lingering psychological consequences of earlier storylines. It remains a significant chapter in the character's Bronze Age history, marking a transitional moment as Spider-Man navigated his new reality.
