Where it came from
The Amazing Spider-Man #212, published by Marvel Comics in January 1981, arrived during a period of transition for the series as it navigated the early 1980s. Written by Dennis O'Neil with interior art by John Romita Jr. and Jim Mooney, the issue is notable for featuring the first appearance of the villain Hydro-Man, a character whose water-based powers provided a unique challenge for the wall-crawler within the established aesthetics of the era.
The cover art, executed by John Romita Jr., reflects the clean, dynamic house style that defined Marvel's output at the time. While Hydro-Man did not achieve the same enduring cultural footprint as many of his contemporaries, the issue remains a consistent point of interest for collectors focusing on Marvel's expansion of the Spider-Man rogues' gallery during the late Bronze Age of comic books.
