The Amazing Spider-Man #215

The Amazing Spider-Man #215 was published in April 1981, emerging during a transitional period for Marvel's flagship title. Following the departure of long-term writer Marv Wolfman, the book was helmed by Dennis O'Neil, who sought to blend classic superhero tropes with the gritty, grounded urban storytelling that defined his earlier work at DC Comics. This issue serves as a standalone chapter featuring Spider-Man facing the Hydro-Man, a newly introduced villain created by O'Neil and artist John Romita Jr.

The visual direction of the issue highlights the evolving style of John Romita Jr., whose dynamic, blocky anatomy began to carve out a distinct aesthetic identity for the title in the early 1980s. The narrative focuses on Peter Parker’s internal anxieties regarding his personal life and the unpredictable nature of his rogue's gallery. While the issue is often viewed by historians as a middle-tier entry in the series, it remains a significant touchstone for collectors interested in the creative shift that preceded the iconic Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. run that followed shortly thereafter.
