Where it came from
Published in June 1981, The Amazing Spider-Man #217 was written by Denny O'Neil and illustrated by John Romita Jr. This issue arrived during a transitional era for the title, positioning Spider-Man within the broader Marvel Universe as he confronted the threat of the Hydroman. The narrative focused on the intersection of Peter Parker's personal struggles and the physical challenges posed by a new, chemically altered adversary.
John Romita Jr.’s art during this period was instrumental in establishing a modern, kinetic visual language for the series. His work emphasized heavy shadows and dynamic character poses, which helped define the gritty aesthetic of Marvel comics in the early eighties. The issue was well-received by fans of the era for its consistent characterization and the introduction of a villain who would remain a recurring, albeit secondary, antagonist in the Spider-Man mythos.
