The Amazing Spider-Man #294

The Amazing Spider-Man #294, released in November 1987, serves as the final installment of the landmark 'Kraven's Last Hunt' storyline. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with interior art by Mike Zeck and Bob McLeod, the narrative explores the psyche of Sergei Kravinoff, a classic Spider-Man antagonist, as he attempts to prove his superiority by defeating and replacing the hero. The story is widely regarded as one of the most mature and psychologically complex arcs in the character's history, moving away from typical superhero tropes toward a dark, somber examination of legacy and mortality.

The aesthetic of the issue is defined by Mike Zeck’s gritty, atmospheric pencils and Bob McLeod’s clean, bold inks, which emphasize the somber, rain-slicked tone of the conclusion. The cover art, also by Zeck, features a stark, iconic image that perfectly encapsulates the story’s grim resolution. Upon its release, the six-part series was highly praised for its tonal departure and remains a touchstone for readers who appreciate character-driven storytelling within the mainstream Marvel canon.
