The Amazing Spider-Man #45

Published in February 1967, The Amazing Spider-Man #45 represents a significant moment in the Silver Age of comic books. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by John Romita Sr., the issue is primarily noted for the debut of the villain the Shocker, a character who would become a recurring antagonist in the Spider-Man rogues gallery. This period of the series was marked by Romita’s shift toward a more romantic and polished aesthetic, which helped solidify the visual language of the title following Steve Ditko’s departure.

The story follows Peter Parker as he struggles with the dual demands of his academic life and his superhero responsibilities, a recurring tension that defined the series under Lee’s editorial direction. Romita’s design of the Shocker, featuring his signature quilted-patterned suit and vibration-emitting gauntlets, was intended to evoke a grounded yet distinctively comic-book appearance. Upon its release, the issue was well-received for maintaining the momentum of the series and introducing a formidable new challenge for the protagonist, further expanding the depth of Spider-Man's world.
