The Amazing Spider-Man #561

The Amazing Spider-Man #561, published in July 2008, serves as the second chapter of the 'New Ways to Die' story arc. Written by Dan Slott and illustrated by John Romita Jr., the issue continues the introduction of the character Anti-Venom. This era of the series followed the 'Brand New Day' publishing initiative, which sought to revitalize the title by returning Peter Parker to his status as a single, struggling photographer navigating a rapidly changing New York City.

John Romita Jr.’s dynamic pencils define the aesthetic of this period, characterized by heavy shadows and kinetic action sequences that emphasize the grit of the city. The narrative focuses on the escalating tension between Spider-Man, Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts, and the mysterious transformation of Eddie Brock. Upon its release, the arc was generally well-received for re-establishing the high-stakes, character-driven conflicts that remain staples of the Spider-Man mythos.
