The Avengers #76

The Avengers #76, published in May 1970, arrived during a transitional period for Marvel Comics as the industry navigated shifting social norms and the expansion of the superhero mythos. Written by Roy Thomas with cover art by John Buscema and Tom Palmer, this issue is historically significant for its role in the evolution of the Black Knight character, specifically the transition of Dane Whitman into a more central figure within the team's ongoing narrative tapestry.

The creative team aimed to deepen the internal dynamics of the Avengers by integrating complex heritage and legacy themes, a hallmark of Thomas’s tenure on the title. The issue was received as a solid entry in the series, appreciated for its steady character work and for advancing the subplot involving the team's various international and temporal connections. Its design and execution reflect the classic Marvel house style of the era, balancing high-stakes action with the soap-opera character development that defined the Silver and Bronze Age of comic books.
