The Books of Magic #20

The Books of Magic #20, published in 1995, is part of the ongoing monthly series that spun out of Neil Gaiman’s celebrated 1990 miniseries. By this point in the publication history, the series focused on the maturation of Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world’s greatest mage. The issue fits into the wider Vertigo imprint's ethos, which emphasized darker, more sophisticated narratives for an adult audience, moving away from traditional superhero tropes to explore folklore, mythology, and the complexities of growing up with immense power.

The creative team for this era of the series included writer John Ney Rieber and artist Peter Gross. Gross, known for his atmospheric and detailed linework, provided a distinct visual identity that grounded the supernatural elements of Tim Hunter’s life. The issue was received as part of a significant mid-90s effort to expand the Vertigo line, maintaining a cult following among readers who appreciated the series' focus on character-driven magical realism rather than combat-oriented action.
