The Books of Magic #21

The Books of Magic #21 was released in 1995 as part of the ongoing monthly series published under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. The series itself was spun off from Neil Gaiman’s celebrated 1990 miniseries of the same name, which explored the occult corners of the DC Universe through the eyes of Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful magician. This specific issue occurs during the tenure of writer John Ney Rieber, who took over the series to steer the narrative into darker, more mature territory.

The interior art for this period of the series was provided by Peter Gross, whose distinctively grounded and often atmospheric style helped define the tone of Vertigo’s fantasy titles. By this point in the series, the creative direction was firmly focused on the psychological toll magic exerted on Timothy, departing from the encyclopedic fantasy tour of the original miniseries in favor of high-stakes personal drama. The issue is regarded by collectors as a quintessential example of the mid-90s Vertigo aesthetic, which prioritized character-driven storytelling over the traditional superhero tropes of the era.
