The Books of Magic #54

The Books of Magic #54 was published by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint in 1999 as part of an ongoing series centered on Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful magician. This issue serves as a mid-run installment within a series that originated from Neil Gaiman’s 1990 prestige miniseries, which explored the occult corners of the DC Universe through the eyes of a protagonist inspired by the British Invasion of comics writing.

The narrative for this period was crafted by writer Peter Gross, who took over the reins of the title to shepherd Tim Hunter through his maturing years. The visual style of this era leaned into the gothic, ethereal aesthetic synonymous with the Vertigo brand, aiming to ground the fantastical elements of magic in the gritty, often melancholic reality of adolescence. The series was generally well-received by critics for its thematic depth and its commitment to maintaining the intellectual, supernatural tone established by its predecessor.
