Where it came from
Published in 1999 as part of the long-running Vertigo imprint series, The Books of Magic #57 serves as a key installment in the chronicles of Timothy Hunter. Emerging from the DC Comics mature readers line, the series was designed to explore the intersection of modern youth culture and the hidden realms of myth and urban fantasy, continuing the narrative foundation established by Neil Gaiman’s original miniseries.
This specific issue features the work of writer Dylan Horrocks and artist David Lafuente, who contributed to the series during a period when it sought to ground its magical elements in more introspective, character-driven storytelling. The visual approach emphasized a slightly more stylized and fluid aesthetic, reflecting the evolving artistic sensibilities of late-nineties independent-leaning comics, and was generally appreciated by the dedicated readership for its focus on Tim’s psychological development as he matured into his powers.
