The Brave and the Bold #178

Published in September 1981, The Brave and the Bold #178 arrived during the twilight years of the title's long-running team-up format. This era of the series was characterized by an attempt to bridge the gap between DC's legacy characters and the more modern, grounded storytelling sensibilities that were beginning to take hold in the early eighties. The issue features a pairing of Batman and the Phantom Stranger, a juxtaposition that allowed the writers to lean into the atmospheric mystery that permeated the title during this period.

The interior art was provided by Jim Aparo, whose definitive run on the title cemented his status as one of the most important Batman artists of the decade. Aparo utilized his signature clean line work and expressive character dynamics to balance the detective-focused narrative of Bruce Wayne with the supernatural, ethereal nature of the Phantom Stranger. The issue was received as a staple of the bronze age of comics, appreciated by readers for maintaining the series' reputation for consistent character interactions and solid, episodic plotting.
