The Brave and the Bold #197

The Brave and the Bold #197, published in April 1983, serves as a significant turning point in DC Comics history as it marks the final issue of the series' original run. Initially created in the mid-1950s as a tryout vehicle for new characters, the title became synonymous with team-up stories featuring Batman alongside a rotating cast of DC heroes. This specific issue was crafted to provide a definitive conclusion to the long-running series, paving the way for the launch of the Batman and the Outsiders title that would debut shortly thereafter.

The creative team for this issue featured writer Mike W. Barr and artist Dave Gibbons. Their approach was to bridge the gap between Batman's traditional detective roots and the growing desire for more dynamic, team-oriented superhero storytelling. By introducing the Outsiders—a group formed by Batman after his departure from the Justice League—Barr and Gibbons successfully transitioned the narrative from a guest-star anthology format into a cohesive, character-driven team book that captured the evolving tone of the early 1980s comic landscape.
