Where it came from
Published in July 1971, The Brave and the Bold #96 represents a period of transition for the long-running DC Comics title. Originally established as a home for historical adventure and anthology storytelling, the series had evolved by the early 1970s into the primary showcase for Batman team-up stories. This issue, featuring Batman alongside Black Canary, reflects the editorial focus on pairing the Caped Crusader with various members of the DC pantheon to maintain freshness in a shifting market.
The issue was written by Bob Haney, a central architect of the series' team-up format, and illustrated by artist Neal Adams. Adams, renowned for his realistic anatomy and dynamic composition, was instrumental in modernizing Batman's aesthetic during this era. His contribution to this issue helped cement the moody, cinematic style that defined Batman throughout the 1970s, garnering appreciation from readers for the visual intensity he brought to the title’s recurring formula.
