The Breaker: New Waves #1

The Breaker: New Waves began serialization in 2010 as the highly anticipated direct sequel to the popular South Korean manhwa The Breaker. Created by writer Jeon Geuk-jin and illustrator Park Jin-hwan, the series continues the martial arts saga of Shioon Yi, who must navigate the cutthroat world of the Murim after the disappearance of his master, Chun-woo Han. The work was published digitally via Daum Webtoon, marking a pivotal shift in how manhwa reached its audience during the medium's transition toward mobile-first platforms.

Park Jin-hwan’s artistic approach for this series is defined by hyper-dynamic combat choreography and a gritty, cinematic visual style that emphasizes kinetic energy. By utilizing the vertical scrolling format of webtoons, the team successfully translated the high-stakes tension of their black-and-white print roots into a modern, reader-friendly layout. The series was met with significant critical acclaim, specifically praised for its sophisticated character development and the evolution of its complex, morally ambiguous world.
