Where it came from
The Chronicles of Corum series was published by First Comics in the mid-1980s, serving as a comic book adaptation of Michael Moorcock's seminal fantasy novels featuring the tragic hero Corum Jhaelen Irsei. These issues sought to bring the sprawling, metaphysical stakes of Moorcock's Eternal Champion multiverse to a visual medium, grounding the high-concept Sword and Sorcery narrative within the sequential art traditions popular at the time.
The visual direction for the series relied on the illustrative style of Mike Mignola during his formative years in the industry, alongside scripts that aimed to capture the dense, melancholy tone of the original literature. While the series is often viewed today through the lens of Mignola's later iconic work on Hellboy, at the time of its release, it was received as a competent and atmospheric expansion of the Sword and Sorcery genre, helping to cement the aesthetic expectations for fantasy comics of the decade.
