The Crown: A Tale of Hell #1

The Crown: A Tale of Hell #1 was published in 1989 by Epic Comics, an imprint of Marvel Comics. It emerged during a period in the late 1980s when major publishers were increasingly willing to explore darker, more mature themes outside of traditional superhero narratives. The series, written by Jerzy Drozd and illustrated by Garry Leach, follows a protagonist who enters hell to reclaim his soul, serving as a dark fantasy meditation on morality and redemption.

The design of the series reflects the gritty, atmospheric aesthetic popular in late-eighties independent and mature-audience comics. Garry Leach, a respected artist known for his meticulous linework, aimed for a somber and visually heavy tone that complemented the series' bleak narrative arc. While it remains a cult classic among fans of 1980s dark fantasy, the title did not receive mainstream critical acclaim at the time, leading to its status as a niche entry in the Epic Comics catalog.
