The Defenders #15

Published in 1974, The Defenders #15 serves as a pivotal entry in the series, featuring a crossover with the Avengers that escalated into the classic Avengers-Defenders War. At this stage in Marvel's history, the title was finding its identity as a home for 'non-team' members who operated on the periphery of the traditional superhero hierarchy. The narrative focus on the conflict between two of the publisher's premiere groups was a deliberate editorial strategy to boost visibility for the more eclectic Defenders lineup.

The issue features cover art by Gil Kane and interior pencils by Sal Buscema. The design aesthetic reflects the mid-1970s Marvel house style, emphasizing dynamic, high-stakes action and dense, character-driven scripts by Len Wein. The collaborative nature of these inter-title storylines was a hallmark of the era's shared universe approach, aiming to maintain reader engagement across multiple monthly publications by weaving deep, multi-issue arcs that required following several different titles simultaneously.
