Where it came from
The Defenders #146 was published by Marvel Comics in 1985 as part of the long-running series that featured the non-traditional super-team of outcasts and mystics. By this point in the series, the book had transitioned from the darker, esoteric themes established by Steve Gerber into a more traditional superhero ensemble piece, navigating the complex editorial landscape of mid-eighties Marvel continuity.
The issue features cover art and interior work consistent with the era's house style, focusing on the team's ongoing struggles against existential threats. While not considered a pivotal key issue in the wider Marvel canon, it serves as a representative example of the series' late-run narrative tone, balancing character-driven drama with the established tropes of a team-up comic book that was nearing its eventual conclusion.
