The Defenders #57

Published in March 1978, The Defenders #57 serves as a key installment in the long-running Marvel Comics series centered on a non-traditional team of outsiders. By this point in the series' history, the title had moved away from its initial iteration as a loose alliance of heavy hitters, shifting toward the character-driven, eccentric storytelling that defined the late seventies. The issue reflects the creative climate of the era, where writers often experimented with smaller, more intimate sub-plots within the larger framework of superhero continuity.

This issue features a script by David Anthony Kraft and artwork by penciler Keith Giffen and inker Klaus Janson. The creative team aimed to balance the surreal, cosmic tone established early in the series with the grounded interpersonal drama of the individual team members. The cover and interior art showcase Giffen’s evolving style, which was highly regarded for its dynamic compositions and idiosyncratic layouts, contributing to the book's reputation as a cult favorite among readers who preferred Marvel's more unconventional titles.
