The Defenders #61

The Defenders #61 was published by Marvel Comics in July 1978 during a period when the series was transitioning from a loose collection of disparate heroes into a more cohesive, albeit still eccentric, team. This issue is notable for being part of the mid-run sequence that leaned heavily into the supernatural and unconventional storytelling synonymous with the title, which often served as a home for Marvel characters who did not fit neatly into the traditional Avengers mold.

The issue features art by Keith Giffen, a creator celebrated for his dynamic and occasionally surreal visual style, with writing by David Anthony Kraft. During this era, the creative team focused on blending high-stakes superhero action with the character-driven introspection that defined The Defenders, aiming to maintain the title's reputation as the most unpredictable book in the Marvel lineup. It was received by readers of the time as a quintessential example of the late-seventies experimental approach to team-based comics.
