The Defenders #90

The Defenders #90, published by Marvel Comics in December 1980, serves as a pivotal entry in the long-running series that featured a revolving roster of unconventional superheroes. During this era, the title was known for its eclectic tone, blending cosmic threats with the personal interpersonal dynamics of characters like Doctor Strange, Valkyrie, and Nighthawk. This issue continues the series' tradition of experimenting with shifting team compositions and high-stakes narrative arcs that defied the standard superhero tropes of the time.

The creative direction for this period of The Defenders was spearheaded by writer J.M. DeMatteis, with artwork primarily contributed by Don Perlin. Perlin was instrumental in defining the visual language of the book throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, favoring a dynamic yet grounded aesthetic that suited the street-level and mystical threats the team frequently faced. While this specific issue is a mid-tier release rather than a major key, it is recognized by collectors as a quintessential example of the series' stable creative output during the Bronze Age of comics.
