The Defenders #86

The Defenders #86, published in August 1980, emerged during a transitional period for the series as it navigated the late Bronze Age of comic books. Marvel Comics utilized this title as a flexible anthology-style team book, allowing for shifting rosters that often paired the core members—Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Valkyrie, and Nighthawk—with rotating guest stars. This specific issue features the creative work of writer Ed Hannigan and artist Don Perlin, who helped maintain the series' signature blend of mystical threats and character-driven interpersonal drama.

The cover and interior art by Don Perlin reflect the illustrative style prevalent in Marvel's non-traditional team books of the era, prioritizing dynamic action sequences that suited the erratic power levels of the group. As part of a series known for its experimental tone, the issue was received as a standard entry in the title's lengthy run, contributing to the Defenders' long-standing reputation as a 'non-team' that served as a home for Marvel's more eccentric or isolated characters.
