Where it came from
The Jaguar #3 was published in 1962 by Archie Comics as part of their short-lived but historically significant foray into the superhero genre known as the Mighty Comics line. Following the industry trend of the early 1960s, Archie attempted to compete with Marvel and DC by reintroducing adventure-based characters, featuring Ralph Hardy, a zoologist who gains the powers of a jaguar through a mysterious totem, as an answer to the pulpy, mysterious heroes of the era.
The character was created by writer Robert Bernstein and artist John Rosenfeld, who aimed to blend traditional jungle-hero tropes with the burgeoning science-fiction aesthetic of the Silver Age. While the series was relatively short-lived and did not achieve the lasting cultural footprint of the company's teen humor titles, it is regarded by comic historians as a fascinating example of the creative experimentation that occurred during the transition between the Golden and Silver Ages of comic books.
