Where it came from
The Kents was a twelve-issue limited series published by DC Comics starting in 1997, serving as a historical Western-themed spin-off focusing on the ancestors of Jonathan and Martha Kent. Written by John Ostrander with art primarily by Timothy Truman, the series explored the turbulent post-Civil War era in Kansas, grounding the mythos of Superman’s adoptive family in the harsh realities of the American frontier.
Issue #9 continues the narrative threads of the saga, balancing historical drama with the thematic exploration of morality and legacy. The creative team aimed to juxtapose the violent landscape of the late 19th century with the eventual moral foundation that would define the Kent family for generations. The series received moderate critical praise for its gritty realism and departure from traditional superhero storytelling, though it remains a niche entry in the broader DC canon.
