Where it came from
Published by Fawcett Comics in 1953, The Marvel Family #85 arrived during the final chapter of the original Captain Marvel publication era. By this stage in the early 1950s, the Golden Age of comics was waning, and the character faced intense legal pressure from National Comics, the publisher of Superman, which claimed Captain Marvel infringed upon their copyright.
The art and stories from this period often featured a team-based approach typical of the Fawcett house style, prioritizing bright, adventurous escapism. While C.C. Beck is the artist most famously associated with the series' definitive look, this specific issue reflects the era's frantic pacing as Fawcett struggled to maintain its market share. It remains a notable artifact of the transition period before Fawcett ultimately settled the lawsuit and ceased publication of its superhero line shortly thereafter.
