Where it came from
Released in 1985, The Marvel Saga was conceived as a comprehensive, chronological guide designed to synthesize decades of fragmented continuity into a cohesive narrative for new and established readers alike. Editor-in-chief Jim Shooter oversaw the project, which utilized existing panels and artwork from throughout Marvel's history, recontextualizing them through new captions and framing sequences to bridge gaps between disparate storylines.
The design and editorial effort were primarily spearheaded by Peter Sanderson, a noted comics historian who brought an academic rigor to the project. The series was well-received by fans who valued its ambition in mapping the complex Marvel multiverse, though it remains a period piece that reflects the specific editorial sensibilities of the mid-1980s regarding retrospective canon management.
