The New Mutants #28

Published in July 1985, The New Mutants #28 emerged during a pivotal era for Marvel's X-Men franchise as Chris Claremont expanded the scope of mutant-centered narratives. This issue features artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz, whose distinctive, expressionistic style began to define the series during this run, moving away from traditional superhero aesthetics toward a more atmospheric and psychologically complex visual language that challenged contemporary comic book norms.

The narrative follows the team as they navigate the aftermath of their earlier trials, serving as a bridge to broader crossovers within the Marvel Universe. Sienkiewicz’s contribution to this era is widely cited by critics and fans alike as a turning point for the medium, as his experimental use of mixed media and shadowy compositions helped elevate the title from a standard team book to a critically lauded exploration of adolescent alienation and cosmic horror.
