Where it came from
Published in July 1985, The New Mutants #29 arrived during a period of high creative momentum for the X-Men franchise. This issue features a narrative scripted by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz, whose distinctive, avant-garde style marked a significant departure from traditional comic book aesthetics at the time. The story continues the development of the teenage mutant team as they navigate the complexities of their powers and interpersonal relationships within the Marvel Universe.
Sienkiewicz’s contribution to this series is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in comic book art, pushing the medium toward a more experimental and expressive visual language. His work on this run, characterized by distorted figures and mixed-media techniques, was initially polarizing but eventually garnered critical acclaim for its psychological depth and atmospheric tension. This issue remains a quintessential example of the creative risks taken during the 1980s that helped redefine the tone of mutant-centric storytelling.
