The New Mutants #81

Published in October 1989, The New Mutants #81 marked a significant turning point in the series' history during the final years of the original title. Written by Louise Simonson with artwork by Terry Shoemaker, the issue is perhaps best remembered as the first appearance of the villainous organization known as the MLF, or Mutant Liberation Front, and the enigmatic leader Stryfe. This period of the series was characterized by an increasingly darker, more militaristic tone, shifting away from the students-in-training aesthetic that defined the book's early years under Chris Claremont.

The issue serves as a primary example of the 'Liefeld-era' aesthetic transition that would soon dominate the X-Men franchise. While Terry Shoemaker provided the interior pencils for this specific issue, the creative direction was heavily influenced by the high-energy, stylized visuals that Rob Liefeld would bring to the title shortly thereafter. It was received as a transitional bridge that modernized the cast's stakes, setting the stage for the massive crossover events and radical character redesigns that defined Marvel Comics at the turn of the 1990s.
