Where it came from
The New Mutants #84, released in December 1989, arrived during a transformative period for the franchise under the guidance of writer Louise Simonson and artist Rob Liefeld. As the series approached its conclusion and the eventual transition into X-Force, this issue served to heighten the stakes for the teenage mutant team by introducing a more aggressive, militaristic tone that foreshadowed the grit of 1990s comics.
Rob Liefeld’s pencils on this issue are widely recognized for establishing the visual DNA of the series' final arc. His kinetic, stylized approach to anatomy and weaponry sought to distance the book from its earlier, more traditional superhero roots, aiming for a high-intensity aesthetic that deeply influenced the comic book industry’s shift toward 'extreme' character designs and dynamic, panel-breaking action sequences.
