Where it came from
The Occult Files of Dr. Spektor debuted in 1973 as part of Gold Key Comics' foray into supernatural horror and detective fiction. Created by writer Donald F. Glut and artist Dan Spiegle, the series centered on Adam Spektor, a paranormal investigator who traveled the globe to solve occult mysteries. The title was a product of the Bronze Age of comics, reflecting the era's growing interest in macabre and gothic themes, while maintaining the family-friendly, code-compliant tone characteristic of Gold Key's output.
Issue #17, published in 1976, maintains the established aesthetic of the series, featuring the clean, illustrative line work of Dan Spiegle, who was highly regarded for his versatility and storytelling clarity. Like other issues in the run, it was designed to appeal to readers looking for a mix of traditional detective work and classic monster tropes. The series as a whole is remembered today as a cult classic, valued by collectors for its atmospheric cover art and the distinct, character-driven scripts provided by Glut.
