The Omega Men #22

The Omega Men #22, released in 1985, is a significant chapter in the DC Comics cosmic series created by Marv Wolfman and Joe Staton. The series was designed to explore complex sociopolitical themes within an interstellar setting, moving beyond traditional superhero tropes to focus on guerrilla warfare and revolution. By the mid-1980s, the title had become a vehicle for experimental storytelling and character development, providing a space for creators to tackle darker, more mature narrative arcs.

This specific issue is widely noted by comic enthusiasts for the debut of the character Lobo. Conceived by writer Keith Giffen and artist Roger Slifer, the character was initially envisioned as a satirical take on the gritty, over-the-top anti-heroes popular in the genre at the time. While Lobo would eventually be reinvented as a major cult icon and main antagonist-turned-antihero, his first appearance here captures a more restrained, menacing iteration of the Czarnian bounty hunter, marking a notable milestone in DC's late Bronze Age publication history.
