Where it came from
The Outsiders #22, published by DC Comics in 1987, emerged during the late stages of Mike W. Barr's definitive run on the team. By this point in the series, the book had firmly established itself as a character-driven alternative to the mainstream Justice League titles, focusing on a group of misfits led by Batman. The creative team, featuring writing by Barr and artwork by Jim Aparo, was tasked with navigating the team through the complex fallout of the Millennium crossover event, which reshaped the DC Universe during this era.
Jim Aparo, a legend of the Batman mythos, provided the interior art for this period, bringing a gritty and grounded aesthetic that complemented the series' more mature, espionage-leaning tone. The issue reflects the editorial direction of the late eighties, which favored intricate, interconnected storytelling across titles. While this specific issue is a mid-run installment, it remains sought after by completists of the Outsiders' original incarnation who value the synergy between Barr's character development and Aparo's iconic penciling style.
