Where it came from
Released in November 1988, The Punisher War Journal #1 arrived at the height of the character's immense popularity during the late 1980s. Published by Marvel Comics, the series was created to provide a more grounded, militaristic look at Frank Castle's vigilante mission, distinct from the mainline Punisher series. The project was conceived by writer Carl Potts, who sought to emphasize the tactical and logistical aspects of Castle’s war on crime.
The debut issue is particularly notable for its cover and interior art by Jim Lee, marking one of his earliest major contributions to the Marvel Universe. Lee’s dynamic, detailed style helped define the aesthetic of the burgeoning 'grim and gritty' era of comics. The issue was well-received by fans of the character, establishing a darker, more tactical tone that solidified Lee’s reputation and served as a precursor to his later transformative work on X-Men.
