Where it came from
The Ribbon Queen #1, released in 2023 as part of a limited series from AWA Studios, serves as the opening chapter of a psychological horror and police procedural story. Conceived by writer Garth Ennis and illustrator Jacen Burrows, the series was designed to explore the intersection of police brutality, moral decay, and supernatural retribution. The narrative centers on a detective investigating a series of gruesome deaths, rooted in the thematic grit and cynical social commentary for which Ennis is known within the comic industry.
The visual identity of the issue relies on Burrows’s meticulous, highly detailed illustrative style, which aims to ground the fantastical and horrific elements of the story in a gritty, realistic urban setting. Upon its release, the comic received attention for its uncompromising tone and thematic weight, marking it as a deliberate effort by AWA’s Upshot imprint to push the boundaries of genre storytelling. It remains a notable entry in the modern independent horror comics landscape for its pairing of a veteran writer with a prominent horror artist.
