Where it came from
The Savage Sword of Conan #72 was published in December 1981 by Marvel Comics under its Curtis Magazines imprint. As part of a long-running black-and-white magazine series, this issue was designed to deliver mature, unfiltered pulp fantasy narratives that bypassed the restrictive Comics Code Authority, allowing for a grittier visual tone and more complex thematic elements that defined the Conan the Barbarian brand during the late Bronze Age of comics.
The interior art and cover featured the work of seasoned illustrators and writers who adhered to the high-contrast aesthetic characteristic of the era's magazine-style publications. By this point in the series, the editorial team focused on blending Robert E. Howard’s original literary legacy with the dynamic, cinematic influence of the Frank Frazetta-inspired visual style that had made the character a cultural touchstone throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.
