The Sensational She-Hulk #16

Published in July 1990, The Sensational She-Hulk #16 is a notable installment in the series' famous run of meta-fictional storytelling. During this period, writer and artist John Byrne pushed the boundaries of the medium by having the character Jennifer Walters regularly break the fourth wall, addressing the reader directly and commenting on the conventions of comic book publishing. This specific issue is particularly recognized for its lighthearted, self-aware humor that diverged significantly from the grittier tone found in much of mainstream superhero literature at the time.

The cover and interior art by John Byrne were designed to emphasize the character’s newfound independence and vibrant personality. Byrne intended to distinguish She-Hulk from her more somber cousin, the Incredible Hulk, by leaning into comedy and absurdity. While the series initially struggled to find a consistent audience among those seeking traditional action, it eventually earned a dedicated following and critical acclaim for its innovative approach to narrative structure and its playful subversion of superhero tropes.
