Where it came from
The Sensational She-Hulk series was launched in 1989 following the character's successful tenure in The Savage She-Hulk and her time with the Avengers and Fantastic Four. This second issue, published in May 1989, continued the unique direction established by writer and artist John Byrne, who sought to leverage the character's inherent wit by embracing a meta-fictional, comedic tone that frequently broke the fourth wall.
John Byrne's design and narrative approach for this run were deliberately irreverent, aiming to distinguish Jennifer Walters from the more somber tone of her cousin, the Incredible Hulk. The creative choice to have She-Hulk interact directly with the reader and the editorial staff was a stylistic departure for Marvel at the time, earning the series a cult following and establishing the template for the character's personality as a self-aware, lighthearted legal professional.
