The Spectacular Spider-Man #17

The Spectacular Spider-Man #17 was published in April 1978, emerging during a period where Marvel sought to expand the web-slinger’s narrative reach beyond the primary Amazing Spider-Man title. This issue was crafted by writer Bill Mantlo and artist Sal Buscema, a creative pairing that became a hallmark of the series. The narrative captures the mid-to-late 1970s tone of the character, balancing Peter Parker’s interpersonal dilemmas with the costumed action typical of the era.

Sal Buscema’s distinct, kinetic art style defined the visual identity of this title for many years. His work on this issue emphasizes clarity and motion, grounding the fantastical battles within the grittier urban backdrop of New York City. At the time of its release, the issue was received as a standard installment in a growing library of Spider-Man stories, contributing to the establishment of the character's expansive mythos and the popularity of the monthly anthology format.
